Health benefits of Turmeric, and how to prepare it as a tea.

Tumeric is a super healthy herb, I use it combined with Lemon in teas, to erase any cold, or infection symptoms, and I get better always surprised how quickly it works. Turmeric is a super herb. The health benefits of this colorful yellow root for our own wellbeing are numerous and are incredibly easy to find, and quick to prepare.

I personally prepare it as tea, and at first when my dear Karima told me about it, felt a tiny bit not interested because of the strong smell, and tingle taste. But you know when you are really feeling bad you drink anything, that was the case, I was with a terrible cold, my throat was closing, and was very painful to swallow. I decided to give it a try, and like a miracle, I was fine in less than 30 minutes.

Since then I use it to help my friends and family, and just in case, I always put a pinch of lemon just to activate all the Tumeric properties.

Inflammation is a necessary process in the body, as it fights off harmful invaders and repairs damage caused by bacteria, viruses, and injuries. However, long-term inflammation has been implicated in most chronic conditions such as heart disease and cancer, so must be controlled. The curcumin in turmeric has proven, strong anti-inflammatory properties that block the action of inflammatory molecules in the body. Studies show positive effects of curcumin on people suffering from conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease, amongst others.

Turmeric is a powerful antioxidant

Curcumin has been shown to be a robust scavenger of oxygen free radicals, which are chemically active molecules that cause damage to the body’s cells. Free radical damage, along with inflammation, is a key driver of cardiovascular disease, so curcumin can play a part in preventing and managing heart disease. Antioxidants in turmeric may also reduce the risk of cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.

Turmeric has anti-cancer effects

Numerous animal studies have explored turmeric’s influence on cancer, and many have found that it can affect cancer formation, growth, and development at a molecular level. Research has shown that it can reduce the spread of cancer and can contribute to the death of cancerous cells. Turmeric and curcumin may also be able to counteract the effects of some carcinogens, such as certain additives used in processed food.

Pukka Herbs Article said about Turmeric health benefits:

"...Turmeric is well known as a spice used in Indian cuisine. In fact, its traditional Indian uses span far beyond this: it's been used for centuries to help keep the skin pure, the blood clean and life long.

In traditional Indian herbal medicine (known as Ayurveda), turmeric has been used to help maintain healthy blood, skin, circulation and as a nourishment to feed the whole body. Could the key to the population of India has one of the lowest rates of chronic degenerative diseases in the world be due to their huge consumption of this incredible spice?

So why's turmeric so special?

Part of the reason is down to the characteristically strong yellow color of this incredible root. These yellow pigments are collectively known as curcuminoids. The root is also brimming with essential oils knowns as turmerones. The curcuminoids and the turmerones work together within the body as powerful antioxidants helping to attack nasty free radicals which can damage and age our bodies. They also stimulate a healthy inflammation response whilst enhancing circulation, protecting the brain, rejuvenating the liver, and targeting pain.

What is turmeric good for?

The health benefits of turmeric are vast and include:

  • Turmeric actively inhibits inflammatory pathways within the body, making turmeric a first choice for inflammations of the musculoskeletal system and the digestive system.

  • Research has shown that turmeric impacts certain pain receptors within the body; it has been demonstrated as being particularly effective for chest and abdominal pain, frozen shoulder, and menstrual cramping.

  • Turmeric contains some very potent polyphenols, also known as antioxidants, which have the ability to protect cellular DNA and repair any existing damage from environmental carcinogens, for example.

  • Turmeric has a significant action on the heart and circulation. It will improve the flow of blood to the heart and encourage anti-platelet activity, reducing the risk of plaque build-up in the arteries.

  • Turmeric also improves blood flow through the liver, improving the efficacy of liver detoxification pathways but also stimulating cellular repair mechanisms in damaged liver cells. This improvement in blood flow and quality impacts significantly upon the quality of the skin, and turmeric can therefore be an excellent remedy for any afflictions of the skin.

  • In the digestive system, turmeric helps balance levels of bacteria, supporting a healthy digestive environment."
